Rudy Mettia, E-RYT 500, discovered Bryan Kest’s Power Yoga studio in Santa Monica, California in 1992, and his true passion emerged. Kest’s non-dogmatic approach to the age-old practice gave Rudy the courage to explore yoga’s different schools and the confidence to take what spoke to him and leave the rest behind. He has creatively carved out his own style within the yoga community becoming one of the most prolific and sought after teachers on the west coast.
Now a Senior teacher at Santa Monica Power Yoga, Rudy has accumulated more than 10,000 classroom hours teaching thousands of students, as well as leading workshops and retreats worldwide. He founded the Yoga Alliance approved Power Yoga 360 Teacher Training method, an original and revolutionary method of training and mentoring aspiring instructors for a career in yoga. Rudy is an adjunct faculty member at the Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health, the largest residential facility for holistic health and education in North America. He also serves as the Yoga Specialist for Harvesting Happiness for Heroes, an organization that aids returning veterans and their loved ones experiencing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and other post-deployment reintegration challenges, a cause close to Rudy’s heart.
Being orphaned at the age of nine, Rudy spent his childhood in countless foster homes as a ward of the state of North Carolina. During this difficult period, he found solace and release in physical activity and trained himself to become an accomplished athlete. Rudy served six years in the United States Marine Corps and since has had a host of unusual “career” opportunities from policeman, bartender, personal trainer, and actor, to tough-as-hell bouncer in Hollywood dive clubs. Through the “past lives” Rudy navigated, he has compiled wisdom and lessons learned along the way, courageously facing down challenges and persevering to become a gifted teacher.
Rudy often describes himself as “obsessed” with yoga and it is clearly evident in his teaching. Utilizing his experiences both on and off the mat, he inspires students to challenge their perceived boundaries while respecting their limitations. As he guides students within the class, he carefully breaks down each movement, finding myopic muscle and energetic actions to achieve the most of each position. Always teaching from experience, whether cautioning about potential injuries, recommending the perfect modification, or reminding a student to stay calm, focused, and within the moment, Rudy uses his wit and charisma to motivate his students. His teaching style helps beginners understand the asana and can revive even the longest yogi’s practice, breathing in new life with a deeper physical and philosophical understanding. Rudy’s intelligent sequencing and unique transitions create an ever-changing experience through the most basic of postures.
Each practice with Rudy is an adventure but the result is always the same, elation from meeting a challenge head on that helps create a strong and resilient physique and mind. Armed with a huge heart, wicked sense of humor, and fierce belief in the practice, Rudy’s enthusiasm for yoga shines through in every class helping each of his students to become a yoga warrior themselves.
